Single Brushed Poly Fabric - A Great Choice For Knit Apparel
When choosing a fabric for a garment, the quality and feel of the material are just as important as the pattern. The softer the fabric, the more comfortable it is to wear and the easier it is to sew. Single brushed poly fabric is a very popular choice for knit apparel, as it is soft and stretchy but also durable. Brushed polyester is typically a little stiffer than other knit fabrics, but it is still incredibly comfortable to wear and great for activewear.
You can find this type of knit fabric in a wide range of colors and prints. It is often used for dresses, leggings, cardigans and lightweight jackets. It has a good amount of stretch and is breathable, making it a good option for summer clothing. Compared to cotton, brushed polyester is less bulky and more durable. It also dries quickly and doesn’t require ironing.
There are many different types of brushed polyester, and you can usually find them labeled with their abbreviations on the fabric tag. Some of these fabrics are brushed on one side (SBP), some on both sides (DBP) and some have a smooth surface (SBP). Brushed polyester feels very similar to wool blends or cotton, but it is typically cheaper and more durable than natural fibers.
Single brushed poly is made from a blend of polyester and spandex, which makes it very flexible and soft. It is typically used for dressmaking, as it has a very soft hand feeling and drapes beautifully. It also doesn’t wrinkle easily and is easy to sew. Brushed polyester is also very easy to care for, as it can be machine washed with warm water and mild detergent.
Some brushed polyester fabrics are also known as soft sweat jersey, poly rayon french terry or even just plain sweat. These are medium weight fabrics and are a mix of cotton and polyester, with the most common being a 50% cotton, 50% poly mix. These have good stretch and recovery and a nice drape but aren’t as light as other, more flowy knits.
Another option is a 50% polyester, 45% acrylic and 5% spandex mix. This fabric is very soft and drapes well, but doesn’t have quite as much stretch as a poly cotton French terry or an SBP. Finally, 50% polyester and 50% viscose is very smooth and has good stretch, but not as much as a SBP or a DBP. This fabric is great for joggers, pants and long sleeve tops.
